It seems like eons ago that a few crafty ladies and I got together to form our very own, bad-ass, renegade crafting club. We named it The Hat City Scissor Squad, and for over five years we met every single Tuesday, rain or shine, to drink beer and make things with our hands.
Of course, it wasn't ALL drinking and crafting. There was gossip too... and karaoke. We had a good time, and over the years we grew super close. Even as our lives changes and drifted some of us to the far stretches of planet Earth, we remain scissor sisters, keeping things crafty in our many varied ways. Several of us are moms. Others are writers, artists, musicians, cooks, and yogis. Most of us are some weird combination of things, refusing to be boxed in by just ONE creative outlet.
Recently one of our long-lost founding members was dropped off (NAKED) in the Madagascar desert. During her twenty one day desert jaunt, our lovely Eva manhandled (ladyhandled?) snakes, thwarted black widows, and exuded bravery in the face of starvation. All of this was super impressive, but not nearly as much as when she decided to fashion herself and her partner sandals made out of palm fronds.
Now that's some crafty shit right there. It's a good thing she'd mastered the fundamentals of fiber weaving so many years ago. Later on she even built herself a bikini from boa constrictor skin.
So next time someone poo-poos your sewing/knitting/weaving project as anything less than totally bad-ass, you think of my girl, Eva.
