It's one of my favorite holidays! All year I look forward to Halloween. There are so many wonderful things to do; carve pumpkins, dress up, party. And then there is the crispy, almost chilly twinge in the air, letting you know that Winter, and it's freezing fingers are just around the corner. Of course, I've heard that Old Man Winter has already enveloped the folks up North. Sorry guys. Here in Austin, Halloween weekend feels more the like the Halloweens I remember as a kid. I'll never forget stuffing layers of tights and sweatpants under our costumes to try and keep warm while trick or treating. It was always nippy, but never really freezing.
I've been busy over this Halloween weekend. I started off by carving some pumpkins, one of my all time favorite holiday related traditions. I love making Jack O Lanterns, and I'm pretty good at it too. I've done some pretty elaborate pumpkins in the past, but my favorites just sort of happen organically. Look for a face in your pumpkin and just carve him on out. The magic happens when you light him up. All of the sudden he's alive, and oggling you with his big crazy eyes.
Our first Halloween party of the weekend was on Friday Night. I went as an aquarium.
They say that necessity is the mother of invention, and no time of year is this more true than Halloween. This costume was dreamt up all of an hour before hand after finding some rubber sharks in my closet. Enter hot glue gun and barettes... Aquarium.
Saturday my friends and I got dolled up as Day of the Dead ghouls and hit the East Side for some costume watching and a drive-in movie. One of my husband's favorite movies was part of a double feature at The Blue Starlite Drive-In. He loves Monster Squad, and I love the other film that was scheduled to play, Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, so it was a great excuse to snuggle up in a truck bed, eat trailer park snacks, and regress into childhood a little bit.
After that we hit up Shangri-La to do a little costume watching. There were some amazing getups, all of which you can check out on their Facebook Page. My gals and I hit up the photo booth to snap a shot of our gorgeously ghostly trio.
Ah, Halloween, my favorite holiday. I'll miss you until next year.
